Georgetown Waterfront

We spent some time today walking around the downtown Georgetown area and the waterfront.  Georgetown has done a very nice job making the area tourist friendly.  This is their boardwalk along the river.

On the street up from the water is the town hall building. In 1841 a terrible fire started to the south of the building at the end of town.  The building was pulled down with ropes to stop the fire from spreading North through town.  This was successful in stopping the fire and the next year the town hall building was reconstructed of brick.  It had the town hall on the second floor and an open air market on the first floor.  Today it houses offices as well as the Georgetown Rice Museum.
The Kaminski house is a pre-Revolutionary War home in the downtown area.  It is typical of many very early homes in the area.  The house is now used as a museum that exhibits antiques from both English and American history.
This cannon was found in the Sampit River along the Georgetown waterfront in 1991.  It was unearthed during excavation for utility improvements.  The cannon is known as a 24 pound naval gun.  This means it is capable of shooting a 24 pound cannon ball that is about 6 inches in diameter a distance of 1 mile.  The cannon which weighs over 5,000 pounds was typically found on naval frigates like "Old Ironsides".  It is marked with a serial number and the federal eagle, and is therefore known to have been cast by the Hughes Foundry near Havre de Grace, MD around 1800.  It is one of only 3 known to exist today and its reason to have been in the Georgetown area is unknown.
Overall a great day in Georgetown.  Tomorrow we head south to Isle of Palms to meet up with the Terry's and the Tony's for the weekend.

Food was amazing! No Rice Paddy, but we stopped at Rollin' Local and had sushi for lunch. They are in the old Rice Paddy location. Then we went to Al Fresco Italian for dinner. WOW! Amazing food. Gail had a spicy seafood fettuccini that was great. I had veal scallopini that was to die for. We are eating well. All washed down with an extra dirty, extra dry martini and a glass of Poppy Chardonnay.
